Lunar Picks – Your Favorite Sporting Team and Rituals
It’s a great time of year for sports – World Cup, NBA finals, Baseball, Australian State of Origin and more. Do you have a team/sport that you are passionate about or a ritual when observing this time of year and your favorite team?
The Three Foundations For Your Powerful Online Presence
Posted by: | CommentsLunarpages, through our strategic partner, LocalDirective, is dedicated to helping you build a powerful online presence that accelerates your business growth. Your most important goal is to establish a firm foundation from which to grow your online presence. Even though it may seem overwhelming with all of the apparent choices, there are only three things you must focus on to achieve online success:
1) A Comprehensive Website that supports pre-defined objectives. This means your first step in developing a new site is to determine what it is you want to accomplish. For many businesses, it is to grow sales online through e-commerce, drive traffic to physical locations, or for phone or form lead generation. But other purposes might be to build deeper brand loyalty or even to help people self-serve customer service functions. Once you have your objective, then you can proceed to methodically follow best-practice guidelines for site development. If you already have a website, you may want to consider a ‘Revitalization’ effort if your site is not delivering the results it should.
2) Once you have established your online destination, the next step is to drive traffic to it. Search Engine Marketing (SEM) in the major national and (potentially local or vertical) search engines enables you to choose to whom your advertising will show, presents a message you want to share, and delivers visitors to the website or landing page destination of your choosing. SEM marketing is immediate, and you can expect results to begin within days from starting your program. It is the ultimate form of directional advertising, boldly replacing the Yellow Pages in that function. Search engine marketing is sometimes called Pay-Per-Click, Sponsored Search or Paid Search. Google says that up to thousands can be earned for each dollar spent in search. Many advertisers report a high ROI as compared to most (if not all) other forms of advertising. What is great about SEM is that it is very controllable – everything from where and when your ads show to how much is spent each day.
3) The third element of your powerful online foundation is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) that builds a strong organic presence for a handful of your most important and highly trafficked keywords. Since the search engines determine your placement for keyword searches, a solid program will attend to both ‘On-Page’ factors (how your website is designed and the content) and ‘Off-Page’ factors that increase your ‘popularity’ for the best placement on search results pages. SEO is a longer process than SEM, and Google suggests expecting up to a year for full optimization. Note that many Social Media Marketing (SMM) opportunities serve as SEO techniques, including use of Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, as well as on-site and off-site blog posting. A good approach is to begin developing your SEO strategy a bit after the start of your SEM program, so you can use what you’ve learned to develop the most effective SEO approach.

Internet Archive – Waaaaaay Back Machine!
Posted by: | CommentsBy Amy Armitage
Have you seen the website Internet Archive, Way Back Machine?
It shows you very old and original versions of websites including Lunarpages in 2001 and all of our designs and progressions over the years.
Lunarpages – May 5, 2001
Below we have showcased the original websites for some of the major players online today and the evolution is so interesting. You can click each image to see a larger view that opens in a new window.
Google – Nov 11, 1998, Dec 02, 1998
Facebook- Dec 12, 1998, Jan 25, 1999

Twitter – March 2, 2001 (not much has changed)
Microsoft – October 20, 1996
CNN - June 20, 2000
YouTube – April 28, 2005
Blogger.com – October 12, 1999
CraigsList – November 11, 1998
MySpace – January 17, 1997
Our question this month for you is this:
What was the first web site you built and how has it improved or evolved compared to how it once was? You can include links. If you have never built a site, then select a site that you regularly visited back in the day and comment on its improvement/evolution over the years.
We think this is going to be a fun discussion and great to see how unprofessional some of these sites looked at the beginning!
Functionality, Design, Usability & Conversion Optimization

It used to be that driving traffic was the major metric to track driving stock prices up and entrepreneurs touting their successes, however, we have all come to recognize that traffic does not equal sales. There are many factors that contribute to a successful campaign including the source of the traffic, the offer itself BUT also your website’s ability to convert visitors into leads or customers. There are many factors that contribute to increases in conversions. A partial list is included below:
- Are there third party security verifications on your site such as Verisign, Thawte, Hackersafe etc
- Are there any dead links?
- Does your landing page relate to the ad or offer the person clicked on?
- Do you even use a landing page?
- Does your landing page have additional links to other information that will cause leaks much like a leaky bucket for visitors to leave?
- Is the checkout process too long?
- Is it obvious what you want the visitor to do?
- Is there an appropriate and balanced use of graphics and text?
- Are there testimonials on the landing page to support the offer?
- If you are doing lead generation, are you asking for more information than you really initially require?
- Have you tried playing around with the layout, buttons styles and wording and use of colors?
- Is there a sense of urgency in your offer?
- Do you spell out the benefits of your offer and not just a list of features?
I highly recommend you go through your site with the above in mind. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

Lunar Picks – Your Favorite Sporting Team and Rituals
Posted by: | CommentsBy Amy Armitage
This topic was chosen thanks to peer pressure from our Customer Service Manager Greg and my husband Jay
Apparently, it’s a great time of year for sports – World Cup, NBA finals, Baseball, Australian State of Origin and more.
So tell us about your ritual when observing this time of year and your favorite sporting team.
Example: Jay’s team is NSW and he puts on his team jersey and buys beer and screams at the TV and then cries when they lose ![]()
Lunar Staff Picks
Casey – I love Dodger baseball!!! I often will even listen to the games over the radio if I am unable to get to a TV or I have a blackberry app if all else fails.
Orlando - fútbol- Manchester United this year go Chicharito! Put on Team Jersey, scream at TV/family members and End with a Carne Asada! (wow so similar to Jay!)
Jonathon – I like the Pittsburgh Steelers. Every game, the whole family puts on their Steelers jerseys (we each have our own favorite player). We all play flag football and the losing team (usually the guys) has to do all the cooking for the day. So the big goal is win, otherwise we can’t watch the game! Of course, with the keg next to the barbeque, it’s not all that bad! Just set up the mini-TV and I’m good!
Greg – NBA: Los Angeles Lakers – purple and gold blood coursing through my veins. Growing up in southern California, this team has been a part of me from the beginning.
MLB: Anaheim Angels – the first baseball game I went to was with my grandfather to see Nolan Ryan pitch. I was around the age of 5, remember exactly where we sat and how my grandfather explained the game to me. The only thing missing is a set of season tickets…and my grandfather too!
Zach – Favorite Sports team is the Chicago White Sox. Ritual is whenever they are on I wear my White Sox gear from the 2005 championship year and scream at the tv when things don’t go well. They usually don’t go well for the White Sox
Roy – I am a sports nut and I like Baseball, Football, Hockey and Basketball. When my team is on, I will wear the teams jersey and have my favorite beverage next to me and just be focused on the game. Win or lose I love the sport of competition.
Katrina – Los Angeles Dodgers. I grew up with them in L.A. and my school gave all honor roll students free tickets to their games every year. Gave me a chance to spend time with my Dad.
Brittany – ANGELS!! I grab my Angels blanket and rally monkey and get ready to watch a good game
Monty - I just sit back and watch Spain doing their best at home.
Chad Reynolds – My favorite team is the Dodgers, but I don’t watch this, or any other ‘Sports’, unless, yes, I am with my Dad or brother – a ‘ritual’ and family affair. My own personal sense of ‘non-boredom’ would definitely be the Discovery Channel, Nat Geo, History, PBS, etc., not ESPN, no screaming on my part
